关公崇拜是中国传统社会最为习见的现象，也是中华民族融合，文化演进,社会发展最具象征性和代表意义的符号。对这位三国史上以兵败身死着称的将领，何以会在中国历史上超越宗教民族，跨越时空两维，覆盖社会全阶层，普及村社家庭，至今犹为海内外华人普遍敬奉的重要文化符号，却一直未有深入研究和切实论证，以致饶宗颐虽有“关学”之说，但却没有实质性进展。

作者从探索中华民族传统文化价值体系构建过程的角度，探索和认识关公信仰千馀年来的形成由来以及累积不绝的演进、发展和超越，何以具有深厚坚实的民间根基，包容四裔的融汇能力、绵延不绝的历史积淀和跨越时空的现实影响。经过20年包括台湾、香港、澳洲等各地访察，从搜集原始资料（包括历代方志、碑刻、版画、壁画、雕塑）作为基础，采用法国“历史年鉴学派”长时段、多角度、全方位的方式，运用历史学、社会学、民族学、宗教学、民俗学等多学科视角，对三国以来一千八百年间关羽崇拜的形成发展、沉积变异进行了全面、系统、周详的论证总结，回答了后世学者对于关羽崇拜的几乎所有疑问。其中涉及到一系列有关历史大事件和学术热点，诸如中国社会分期、唐宋及明代的几次社会转型、江湖社会、理学评价、神道设教、儒教与“政教合一”、中华各民族纷争融合中的汉民族意识形成和发展，晚明商业社会的形成，晋商世家的延续奥秘、满族入关前崇拜关公的秘密等等问题，也从关羽崇拜的特定角度进行了具有新颖视野的论述，目的在于剖析这一问题的症结，或者提出一种新的思路，纵向探索中国传统道德／价值体系构建和发展过程。其中不乏对一些极有兴味的历史细节的揭秘解密。

全书采用材料大多为作者亲自采集，以往很少纳入学界视线，因而得出的结论也每出于传统论说之外，展现出一片新的学术空间。当今学人议论“文化研究”者伙矣，但多为理论言说，绝少具体成果。相信这部论着会成为“文化研究”中国学派的第一个案例。这部著作的证据和论述，不仅足以颠覆历来文学史对于《三国志演义》形成演变的传统观点，而且在探索中华民族道德／价值体系的传承演进、沉淀汰弃升华过程中，佛道儒三教圆融进程以及儒家学说如何整合各种思想文化尤其是民间资源，确立发展中国文化精义方面，也与动辄孔孟老庄，以经注经的方式显有不同，开拓出新的学术视野。

本书部分内容自1995年以来陆续在海内外发表，包括台湾清华大学中语系《小说戏曲研究》、香港岭南大学学报、内地的文学、历史学、宗教学、民族学专门刊物，受到有关专家好评。原中国魏晋南北朝史学会会长朱大渭先生评介认为“考证精深，论述严谨，将宏观与微观相结合，烛隐探微，新意迭出”，“这部著作所以取得如此成就，除了作者学识渊博，用力甚勤外，还在于他能打通‘中西’，并将中国文化的大传统与小传统，‘精英文化’和‘通俗文化’相结合，以此发皇古义，融会新知，推雅取正，开辟出一个新的文化研究领域。”俄罗斯科学院通讯院士李福清则认为：“内容十分翔实”，“意见极有道理”。法国陈庆浩、台湾王秋桂、香港金庸、马幼垣等海外多位著名学者也给予极大关注和推荐。
